Nail That Colour – Mary Quite Contrary

As George will tell you i’m more of a natural beauty than showcasing stocks of Rimmel coral red lipstick and MaxFactor eye shadow, much to my mums dismay! But I am an avid fan of nail varnish, and recently have been buying them just for the name.

I first noticed a couple of weeks ago, both in my Elle issue and walking through Boots, that the names of the nail colour attracted me more than the colour. For instance – Mary Quite Contrary and Round and Round the Garden are names christened by Rimmel, and I doth my hat to them (maybe borrow George’s hat, or just bow in my Coast dress). Mary is a dusky lavender, and Round and Round the Garden is a timid chalk green (the little sibling of the powerful and bold emerald).

I took them and immediately hunted for Mary’s nail colleagues. Ring a Ring O’ Roses, Ethereal, Little Bo Peep and Funtime Fuchsia. Little Bo Peep literally I just had to have – could not stop smiling! I was very tempted to have Pulsating and Pompous just because I laughed out loud!

I may sneakily wear Mary to work… no one will notice not like i’m wearing Pulsating, or Red Carpet……… Seriously, go to your nearest Boots and indulge!

Review – Elegant Touch Limited Edition Union Jack Nails – Funky Betty

Here’s my nails from last Wednesday –

I can’t wear a whole set of false nails.  It makes my nails feel like they are being pulled off upwards.  It doesn’t matter how they are put on, what brand, glue, sticky tabs, anything, they all feel slightly painful to wear.  They are also a bit of a novelty for me, as I was a horrible, compulsive, persistent nail biter until some time last year.  I still bite my nails, but between stretches of non – biting.  I tend to put one on, having never worn a whole set for longer than half an hour.  It’s a bit different…

So, I spotted these false nails in my local Discount UK (as ever… did you expect it to be Boots?), I thought 99p wasn’t too much to splash out on them.

These Elegant Touch false nails are meant to be a limited edition range of Union Jack designs, this one being called Funky Betty.  The exact design can be purchased from Paint Nails for £3.03, down from £7.10.  The original Union Jack design can be purchased from Boots for £6.45.  Ninety nine pence.  Not bad, eh?  The box comes with 24 nails, of nine different sizes, and a tube of ‘pink gel glue’.  It just smelt like normal nail glue.  Supergluey.  The pink was a tint more than anything.  According to their length guide, which consists of five different sizes, these are the second shortest ones, ‘short’ length nails.

I put one on Tuesday evening.  The photo above was Wednesday morning on the way to college.  I’d managed to keep it on overnight!  The varnish i’m wearing with it is Rimmel Lasting Finish No. 500, Disco Ball.  I like clear glitter varnish, it doesn’t show the chips quite as badly.

I kept the nail on until Thursday night, when after going to band practice, the pub, and carrying a bass to and from Birmingham on public transport, it weakened at the sides and started to make crackly noises.  I took it off to replace it later.  The glue had held well, I think.  I don’t know how long these things are meant to last, but I think it did good.

I did put another one on, but I don’t think I used enough glue.  It fell off within a day.  I think I need to get the knack of it.

I love them.  I think I need to buy a few more, because this could become a fun new obsession! I’m not sure if I would spend £7 on them, but for a few quid spare change, they are well worth it. People at college even noticed!

Skinny Jeans – Inside Or Outside?

This has been a matter of debate inside my own head for the past few days. Do your skinny jeans go inside, or stay outside, of your boots?

I zip mine inside my boots. Mostly because I can’t easily fit mine over my boots, they tend to not lend well to being forced over the top of a pair of Dockers, or as I have now, fake ones.

When I asked W whether they went in or out, he said it used to be the norm to tuck them in, back in the Eighties, then people were mocked for it, and now it seems to have come back in. I think he’s firmly for the ‘out of boot’ look, but he won’t actually say.

Anyone wish to offer an opinion?

Review – Colorsport Diva 30 Day Mascara

This is a review of something i’ve always wanted to do. I dye my hair, and I do it an AWFUL lot. I even get jokes about it at work, and i’ve only been at my workplace since September. But i’ve never done my eyelashes.

The end of my eyelashes fade out to blonde. You can’t really tell the ends are there, but they’re longer than they look. So yesterday, when I went looking for some hair elastics (I was intending to braid my hair again), but found this, I decided to put the unusually overpriced hair bands back and buy the kit.

I was in Bodycare, not Boots, so I paid nowhere near the £8 odd price they are asking. My kit was 3.99. There was a black or a brown option. I chose black, as this is pretty much the only mascara I own, and i’d rather opt for the extreme than the subtle. This product is a 30 day mascara. I don’t expect it to actually last that long (probably based on lab testing etc), but somewhere close would be very good! The box contains 16 applications, which seems like great value, however long it lasts!

I did my skin test…

and nothing happened. So today I proceeded with the proper attempt. Yes, I am resting my elbow on a mahoosive bottle of Bacardi. Last night off before I go back to work.

This is the contents of the box, also seen in the picture. Pretty much what you’d expect to see. The colour part, the developer part, mixing tray and a stick contraption, and the instructions. I rarely follow the instructions on hair dye any more, relying on my previous experience. But as this is different, i’ll be sticking to them. Closely. I mixed up the recommended amount. I think. It says to add 2cm of the colour to 8 drops of developer. However it’s hard to control the drops that come out. This is the product mid – mix –

I tried to take a before picture, so you could see if it worked. Here is the before (i’m also dyeing my hair right now) –

It’s a bit blurry, but you can see the colours. And the pink on my forehead. And here is the after –

It’s a subtle result. It’s worked a bit, but they’re not black. I might try again tomorrow, and update you with the results. Maybe I didn’t mix it properly. And I think i’ll use a mascara brush to put it on, the stick wasn’t the best thing to use to get the dye on BOTH sides! Despite this, I can see a difference myself, and i’m reasonably happy!

Now for the eyebrows. Those photos showed that they need doing!
